About South Sudan

South Sudan is the earth’s newest nation, gaining official independence from Sudan in July 2011. It is also one of the world’s youngest nations, with just over 12 million citizens, having a median age of 17 years. South Sudan has struggled with good governance and nation building and has attempted to control rebel militia groups operating in its territory. Economic conditions have deteriorated since January 2012 when the government decided to shut down oil production following bilateral disagreements with Sudan. In December 2013 the young government was further disrupted when several groups splintered from the government with subsequent inter-tribal violence. Currently the struggles between groups trying to consolidate their power have resulted in the displacement of over 1.6 million of the young nation’s citizens within her own borders. In the midst of great uncertainty, however there is a great hunger and openness amongst the people toward the good news of Jesus and the Kingdom.
